Description: CONTINENTAL CARVED, POLYCHROME AND PARCEL GILT OAK ''MOURNER'' FIGURE
LATE 19TH/ EARLY 20TH CENTURY
the standing female figure wearing a gathered gown with a high neck and cloak, and a turban style headpiece with crenellated lappets, on a hexagonal lead weighted base
61cm high

Notes: Note: This figure of a contemplative woman is a copy of one of the bronze statues originally installed on the tomb of Isabella of Bourbon (1436-1465), in St. Michael''s Abbey, Antwerp. The figure, known as a ''Weeper'' or ''Mourner'', depicts an ancester of Isabella''s, and were themselves copies of other figures from Burgundian noble tombs. Of the twenty-four original statues, only ten survive and are in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam. Popular as study objects for artists and academics in the late 19th century, they were copied in other materials.
