Lon: W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1777. 1st edition of the official account of Cook’s 2nd voyage. “...On the second, and historically most important, Voyage (13 July 1772 to 30 July 1775) he began by cruising as far south as possible round the edge of the Antarctic ice… Cook earned his place in history… by the foundation of British Australia… On his second voyage, of 112 men on board the Resolution, which he commanded, Cook lost only one by disease-and that not scurvy- a unique achievement in his time.” -PMM 223. Sabin 16245. Mendelssohn pp377-378. 4to. Vol I: [i]-[ix],x-xl, 378pp, pp193-200 misbound between pp272-273 with their plate. Vol II: [8], 396 pp. Frontis, Vol I’s ffep, and both vols’ title leaves separated, titles have marginal losses. Contemp leather. Bdgs worn. Front of volumes loose, as are some internal regions of texts. 56 (of 65) plates and foldouts: 55 (of 64) engraved plates/maps (some folding) + 1 printed folding table (at Vol II, pp364-365). The plates include maps, views, diagrams, a frontis, and portraits of people near where the Resolution and Adventure landed, mostly in the Pacific. Plate XXV misbound at Vol I, p287. Pl XLIX misbound at Vol II, p32. 3 plates separated, 3 plates repaired on verso, several folding plates have tear to inner section. Foldouts have wear to edges. 2 plates (facing Vol I, p309 and p310) are just slightly larger than the text leaves, and consequently have minor losses to images. Frontis margins and foldouts creased and edgeworn. 1st folding map has tear overlapping upper corner and small tear to inner section (partly repaired on verso). Map at Vol II, pp198-199 has tear to inner section. Marginal tear to Vol I, pp291-294. Minor foxing, plates’ images very good. 9.2 Lb.
