*David Bailly (1584-1657)
portrait of the painter francois gysels.
Pen and black ink and two shades of gray wash on vellum.
173 by 143mm.
Provenance:
Probably Christiaan Kraam, his sale, Utrecht, Beijers, 7 December 1875 and following days, lot 3646;
Jacobus A. Klaver (bears his collector's mark, not in Lugt), his sale, Amsterdam, Sotheby's, 10 May 1994, lot 48.
Exhibited:
Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum, Tekeningen van oude Meesters. De verzameling Jacobus A. Klaver, 1993, no.33.
Literature:
H. van Hall, Portretten van Nederlandse Beeldende Kunstenaars, Amsterdam 1963, p.122, no.2.
Though better known today for his illusionistic still-life paintings, in his own time Bailly's meticulously executed portrait drawings attracted at least as much praise, and were mentioned in glowing terms by J.J. Orlers in his Beschrijvinge der Stadt Leiden of 1641 (p.372). There are considerable similarities between this drawing and a pair of portraits of 1628 in Groningen (inv.1931-129 and 1931-130), permitting a tentative dating to around the same time. The identity of the sitter is recorded on an 18th century copy of this drawing, in a Haarlem private collection, which bears the inscription: Francois Gysels. Schilder. This must refer to Francois Gysels the Younger, who was born in Bailly's native town of Leiden circa 1600; no works by him are known.
