More About this Item

Description: DAVID JAMES
(british 1853-1904)
"EVENING TIDE"
Signed and dated ''James 99'' bottom right; also signed, dated and titled verso, oil on canvas
25 x 50 in. (63.5 x 127cm)
provenance:
Newman Galleries, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Private Collection, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Condition Report: The relined canvas in fair overall condition apart from some restored areas and more minor retouches in parts of the sky, some restoration in parts of the sea, including at lower left edge, bottom edge at left, lower right edge and bottom edge at far right. Looking at the painting carefully under UV light we note that the vast majority of the water is unrestored. That part of the water that is restored includes retouching along the very outer bottom right edge extending into the bottom edge at right surrounding the signature. There is an additional minor scattered tiny retouches in parts of the water. There is some retouching along the bottom left edge of the water and into the bottom edge of the water in Goddard areas including along bottom edge at left and lower left corner. Most of the water is unrestored - there is additional retouching the water beneath the far left to see gaul and some additional retouching in the water that is generally minor in center. Relative to any restoration in the sky, there is restoration in the sky along the upper right edge and extending into parts of the sky going left. This includes some restoration in the sky at upper left some restoration in the sky at upper center right and some restoration in the sky at far left including a long top edge. There is additional minor retouching in parts of the Sky. Under UV light, part of the painting in the sky is somewhat difficult to read due to the use of pigments that appear purplish under UV light. We would say that the vast majority of the painting is in generally fair to good overall condition.
Frame: 30 3/4 x 55 1/2 x 2 in.
