Description: [White House] Land deed countersigned by James Hoban (1762-1831), the Irish-American architect whose design for the White House was chosen by President George Washington in 1792. Hoban supervised the construction of the north wing of the Capitol from Thornton's design from 1798-1800 and rebuilt the Presidents House after the British burned it during the War of 1812. Hezekiah Langley of the City of Washington an Attorney in fact of William Rea late of the City sold land to Lewis J. Kennedy for $400 on September 25, 1821. Signed by Hezekiah Langley and countersigned twice by William Hewill and James Hoban as Justices of the Peace, below main portion of text on p and after the attest on page . Docketed on verso Received September 26th 1820 , and countersigned by Washington DC Clerk of the Courts, Wm Brent. Docketed on p, which is otherwise blank. 12 3/4 x 7 5/8 in. Partly split along folds. Documents signed by Hoban are now rare.
