Description: [Thornton, William] Deed dated July 12, 1822, from a mortgage countersigned by Dr. William Thornton (1759-1828) as Justice of the Peace. John H. Sherburne and Mary Ann Sherburne took out a mortgage for 2 lots in Washington County, District of Columbia, with payments due over subsequent years. Lower portion of 2nd page provides for the sale of all or part of the land at auction, with the proceeds to be used to pay off the mortgage, in the event of nonpayment. Signed by John H. Sherburne and Mary Anne Sherburne, documents text handwritten by another person. Countersigned twice by William Thornton and Enoch Reynolds, as Justices of the Peace. Thorntons design for the US Capitol was accepted by President George Washington in 1793, for which he received $500 and a building lot in the city of Washington. In 1794 Washington appointed him one of the citys commissioners and in 1802 President Thomas Jefferson appointed him head of the Patent Office, a position he held until his death in 1828. pp for the text, docketed on p. 15 x 10 in.
