Description: (DESIGN.) Maes, Karel. Group of 3 linocut proofs. Proof for composition published in Het Overzicht: 296x260 mm; 11 3/4x10 1/4 inches, initialed and dated 1922 in pencil and signed in plate * Untitled composition on pink paper, 279x223 mm; 11x8 3/4 inches, signed and dated ''22 in pencil, lower right and signed in plate * Composition 10, proof for Belgian periodical Herleving, on white paper: 11 3/4x10 1/4, signed in plate, stamped "M.K." lower left, and with stamp of Emile Maeyens, owner of De Distel, Antwerp, lower margin. [Antwerp, 1922]

Notes: Maes was one of the preeminent Belgian modernists and was closely associated with Jozef Peeters, Pierre-Louis Flouquet, Rene Magritte and Victor Servranckx, among others. This work is from his best period and his paintings of this era also focus on geometric abstraction. Most of his linoleum cuts were published in journals in the 1920s in black and white only--see William P. Carl (williampcarlfineprints.com).
