Between 1605 and 1665 Spain saw a cultural heyday that was reflected in the art of Velazquez, Murillo, and Calderon. On the other hand, it was a period of political decline and of serious economic and social crisis. This painting was one of the earliest portraits, if not in fact the earliest, of Philip IV by Velazques, who painted the monarch repeatedly.
