Artist or Maker: Duncan Grant (1885-1978)
Description: The barn at Charleston
signed 'D Grant' (on the reverse)
oil on canvas
25 x 30 1/4 in. (63.5 x 76.7 cm.)
Painted circa 1944.
Exhibited: New York, Katonah Gallery, Bloomsbury Artists at Charleston: Paintings from the Reader's Digest Collection, August - October 1987, no. 15.
Notes: In September 1916 Vanessa Bell took a lease on Charleston farmhouse, and from then on the house was to provide a home for many people. Initially it was to allow Duncan Grant and David 'Bunny' Garnett to do farm work as they were conscientious objectors to compulsory military service. All the artists painted the local views many times, the barn, which is still there, being a favourite subject. A similar view by Grant The Barn by the Pond, 1925, is in the collection of the City of Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museums.
