Lot 531: Duncan Grant (British, 1885-1978) Still life with
20th Century Art & Design
December 12, 2012
Oxford, United Kingdom
Description: Duncan Grant (British, 1885-1978) Still life with goblet and apple, circa 1916-19 inscribed 'D. Grant 191?' verso, oils on canvas 17 1/2" x 21 1/2". Provenance: Simonette Strachey and by descent. This work is consistent with several still-lifes of circa 1916-19 and the alabaster goblet appears during those dates in several works painted at Charleston. A richly figured textile is reflected in the surface of the table, which is again a motif he repeated around this time. The inscription on the reverse is thought to be by Grant, but from a later date. It is known that Grant went through the Strachey families pictures in the 1950s, then at Gordon Square, where he inscribed some of the paintings with dates and signatures. We would like to thank Richard Shone for helping to catalogue this work.
