Dutton, Sylvester and Vince Michaels: Panoramic view of Canton
Panoramic view of Canton over the Pearl River. 1863. 4 salt prints attached together as a panorama, linen-backed. 25 x 144 cm. 2 sections signed and dated by the photographers and 1 monogrammed in lower edge in the negative.
Sylvester Dutton came to Canton from San Francisco in 1860 and in 1863 he became partners with Vince (?) Michaels, the period the print offered here is from. Their partnership was shortlived and from 1864 - 1866 Dutton operated a gallery on his own in Honam. The panorama here shows the American flag on one of the buildings, demonstrating the early American commerical representation in Canton. An extremely rare full panoramic view by Dutton & Michaels. - Slight fading in lower edge and in folds, some light creases, a few light foxing spots in sky area, otherwise with strong contrasts and in very good condition.
