More About this Item

Description: Early Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Watchspring Decoration, probably Morgan, Cheesequake, NJ, possibly Crolius or Remmey Family, Manhattan, NY, second half 18th century, ovoid jar with footed base, heavily-tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, decorated on the front and back with a curled cobalt "watchspring" design. Additional cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Albany-slip-glazed interior. This jar's decoration is consistent with products of Captain James Morgan of Cheesequake, New Jersey; however, based on recent archaeological studies, similar pieces have been attributed as early products of the Crolius and Remmey families of Manhattan, New York. Long vertical crack to left of one handle. 5" crack on side, continuing partway onto underside. Tight 3" crack from rim. Two rim chips. Several small base chips. Tight line in end of one handle. H 10 3/4".
