Le grand prédicateur franciscain, mort en 1444, a
été canonisé six ans après en 1450, mais dès la bulle
pontifiale d›Eugène IV en 1432, il était devenu très
populaire. L''iconographie traditionnelle le montre,
maigre et fatigué à cause de ses nombreuses
pénitences, en train de prêcher dans ses habits
de pauvreté, tenant un livre ouvert d''une main,
et de l''autre le Signe du Christ, un disque doré
portant le monogramme JHS (pour Jesus Homini
Salvator) entouré des flmmes rayonnantes. Il
est exceptionnel qu''il soit devant un paysage, ici
des collines avec une ville et ses fortifiations au
fond, peut-être Pérouse, et des «rocca», des petits
châteaux-forts, devant.
Ce panneau a été attribué par Van Marle à Pietro
di Giovanni d''Ambrogio (1409/1410- après 1449),
un élève de Sassetta, par comparaison avec les
représentations du même personnage à l''église
de l''Observance à Sienne (1439) et au musée
communal de Lucignano. Cette attribution a été
refusée par Roberto Longhi , puis par Brandi.
Par ailleurs, il semble que Federico Zeri ait
pensé que ce tableau relevait de l''école romaine
(photothèque Zeri en ligne, notice n° 19895,
comme anonyme du Latium, XVe siècle), mais sans
prendre en compte l''aspect toscan du paysage. Plus
récemment Andrea De Marchi a fait une nouvelle
proposition d''attribution à Agostino di Marsiglio,
un artiste bolonais actif à Sienne, mort en 1469.
