Patricia Jobe Pierce notes that while Tarbell painted few still life canvases, "he incorporated still life details into most of his major interior scenes ... [which] influenced [Joseph Rodefer] DeCamp, E.L. Major, H. Dudley Murphy, Elizabeth Paxton and other painters to compose interesting still life subjects. His paintings of peonies had a permanent impact on Marguerite S. Pearson's still life renditions." Regarding Tarbell's choice of subject, Pierce writes: "In New Castle, N.H., Tarbell's garden blossomed with Hollyhocks, roses and peonies (his favorite flower). These were the flowers he knew, grew, and painted" (Edmund C. Tarbell and the Boston School of Painting,1889-1980, 1980, p. 117).
