Edmund Tarbell (1862-1938) portrait of eleanor hyde signed Tarbell, l.l. oil on canvas 44 by 34in. (111.8 by 86.4cm.) Painted in 1905. Born into a prominent Maine family in 1880, Eleanor Hyde was the daughter of General Thomas Hyde, who served with distinction in the Union army during the Civil War. After the war ended, General Hyde returned home to Bath, Maine where he founded Bath Ironworks. The Ironworks proved extremely successful, bringing considerable prosperity to the region as well as to the Hyde family. General Hyde built a large family home in Bath, called Elmhurst, where his daughter Eleanor was raised. The Hyde family was very musical, and Eleanor showed considerable promise as a singer. Prior to her marriage to Dr. John C. Phillips of Boston, Massachusetts in 1908, Eleanor traveled to Paris where she studied under Nadia Boulanger. She became an accomplished singer, and continued to perform at recitals in Boston until she was close to eighty. Edmund Charles Tarbell painted Eleanor Hyde's portrait in 1905 when the artist had reached the height of his success. The leader of the Boston school of figural impressionists, Tarbell was known especially for his plein air portraits of elegant young women.
