Description: The wife of Michael Matthew Cunniff (1848-1914), a prominent banker and Boston Democratic party leader, Mrs. Cunniff was active in religious and civic charities, in addition to fund raising efforts during World War I. Her son, M.M. Cunniff, Jr., commissioned the portrait from Tarbell, who rented his Boston studio from the family. When Michael, Jr. died in 1938, Mrs. Cunniff gave the pearls she is wearing in the portrait to his private nurse in appreciation for his care.Oil on canvas, 50 1/2 x 40 inches. Signed and dated "Tarbell '29" u.r. In a carved, ebonized and gilded Thulin frame with incised monogram, signed and dated "Thulin 1928."Provenance: Descended in the family of the sitter.
