Edward John (E.J.) Hughes 1913 - 2007 Canadian oil on board Savary Sunset 14 x 18 inches 35.6 x 45.7 centimeters signed and dated 1935 and on verso titled and inscribed ""belonging to Grace Melvin"" / ""Winton picture varnish, Aug. 1988, E.J.H."" Literature:Ian Thom, E.J. Hughes, 2002, similar painting entitled Looking from Savary Island dated 1935 reproduced page 21 Provenance:Grace Melvin, Vancouver Private Collection, Vancouver Savary Sunset is an accomplished early work by one of the West Coast's and Canada's finest landscape painters. In 1935, Hughes was finishing his studies at the Vancouver School of Decorative and Applied Arts, and attended a summer camp for art school students on Savary Island. Thom mentions that it was Frederick Varley that introduced the use of wood panels at the art school. This painting is a fine atmospheric work, full of the freshness of this beautiful view.
