REVELSTOKE AND MOUNT BEGBIE signed; signed, titled and dated "1962" on the reverse oil on canvas 61 by 91.4 cm. 24 by 35 in. Lawren Harris was an early and enthusiastic supporter of Hughes's paintings. Writing to the National Gallery to recommend the purchase of some of Hughes's work, Harris described the canvases as "unique in Canada, factual, literal, almost photographic and at the same time more saturated with the spirit of this coast, its very feel, than anything now being painted". Hughes first painted in and around Revelstoke in 1958, where he found as much inspiration in the landscape as he did along the coast of Vancouver Island.
