Notes: This edition was published in New York where the Golls had lived from 1939 to 1947. A French edition was published on Paris by Editions Hemispheres on 1949, after the couple returned to France from the exile in New York because of the Jewish origins of the poet. Elegy of Ihpetonga is dedicated to Picasso and reflect Golls experience in New York. A comment preceding the poem explains its title: Ihpetonga, which signifies high cliff, was the name that the Canarsie Indians gave to that part of Brooklyn which today is known as Columbia Heightsand which dominate the port of New York. There this poem was conceived. For this book Picasso made four wash drawings, dated April 11, 1949, on lithographic paper, printed by Mourlot Freres, Paris. The English edition contains the same original lithographs, dated 11.4.1949, as the French, and differ from the French edition for the appearance: The text is printed on red, grey, blue, and white paper, and the lithographs are mounted on black paper. REF: CRAMER #70.
