New York, NY, USALive Auction
Description: Artist: HENRI DE TOULOUSE-LAUTREC (1864-1901) Size: 17 7/8 x 23/14 in./45.4 x 59 cm One of the great collections in modern printmaking, Tolouse-Lautrec's Elles portfolio "has been interpreted as a chronicle of the daily lives of lesbians involved in the worlds of prostitution and entertainment" (Frick Collection). Similar to Degas' pastels, these images emphasize intimate, quotidian moments before, after, or outside the performance of sexual entertainment - a woman seen from behind pinning her hair up, for example, with only a gentleman's top hat upon the bed as a signifier of something more salacious outside the temporal frame. "They are women to my liking," Lautrec noted with both tenderness and cynicism, and lived with them for weeks at a time between 1892 and 1895, continually witnessing and recording both their ennui and intimacy.
