Lot 54: Elvis Presley Owned and Used Hand Gripper Gifted to 1950s Girlfriend
October 29, 2016
Memphis, TN, USALive Auction
Like any mega star, Elvis was always being introduced to important individuals but like any regular person, he was concerned about the impression he would make. With this in mind, Elvis was known to squeeze a hand gripper to increase the strength in his hand to ensure a firm handshake. The offered hand gripper with blue grip was personally owned and used by Elvis and comes with a letter from Morgan Taylor that states:
I, Morgan Taylor, do declare that I dated Elvis Presley in January 1958 when I lived in New Orleans and he was filming King Creole. I met him on the set of the film and had lunch with him in the commissary numerous times along with his costars, Walter Matthau and Carolyn Jones. Also present were his father and mother Vernon and Gladys Presley. This was a special time before he enlisted in the army in March. Throughout the years he invited me to Graceland and many concerts. He visited my parents home and offered to buy them a car and a bigger house which we declined. He was a very generous and kind man. Elvis was very interested in having a firm handshake and used this gripper to improve his strength as well as benefit his Karate moves. This is the one from this image of his boarding the Lisa Marie in April 1976. He gave it to me in the fall of 1976.
The gripper is also offered with a photo reproduction of an image of Elvis boarding the Lisa Marie with hand gripper in hand. The hand gripper measures 5 by 4 1/2 inches (12.7 x 11.43 cm) and is accompanied by a letter of authenticity from Graceland Authenticated.
Condition Report: The gripper presents in working condition, but does exhibit wear from use in the metal spring and plastic handles. Excellent to Mint condition.
