Après 1900 Bourdelle multiplie les créations qui font référence à l'Antiquité ou à la mythologie. Sélénée personnifie la lune chez les Grecs anciens. Généralement représentée comme une belle jeune femme parcourant le ciel sur un char d'argent tiré par deux chevaux, elle est ici figurée couchée sur l'arc de cercle de la lune. Bourdelle décrit ainsi son oeuvre : "C'est la déesse de la nuit, la lune au grand arc, posée sur les nuages". Le modèle était une amie de l'artiste, madame Keiller

After 1900 Bourdelle was very inspired by Antiquity and Mythology. Sélénée personified the moon in the Ancient Greece. Here she is represented liying on the moon crescent. Bourdelle used to discribe his work as: "the divinity of the night, the moon crescent resting on the clouds." The model was one of his friend, Mrs. Keiller
