Notes: A well-ordered home and deference to religious values were particularly prized in the conservative climate of 1880's France. Wisely, Munier directed the gaze of the charming young sisters of Evening Prayer outside the canvas, thus avoiding reference to a crucifix or Catholic image and assuring the scene's appeal for a broader international clientele as well. Munier's award at the Salon of 1887 for Evening Prayer is therefore no surprise. Munier is increasingly recognized as one of Bouguereau's finest students along with Leon Perrault, Gustav Jacquet, Charles A. Lenoir, Jules Cave and Elizabeth Gardener Bouguereau.
