Commentaire : Peintre de la nature et de l''harmonie, Ménard ne céda pas à la tentation de l''Impressionnisme et consacra sa carrière à ressusciter le paysage historique, peuplant collines et sous-bois de figures aux échos symboliques ou mythologiques. Fils du directeur de la Gazette des Beaux-Arts, il est également le neveu du peintre et écrivain Louis Ménard et passa une partie de son enfance à Barbizon.
Si ses aspirations rapprochent cet élève de Bouguereau de la peinture classique, des Poussin et autres Claude Lorrain, son art n''a pourtant rien d''académique et se rapproche parfois du symbolisme ou encore de l''idéalisme d''un Puvis de Chavannes : " René Ménard est plein de rêves, et son art n''est que songes1 ".
L''œuvre que nous présentons, pour laquelle une étude préparatoire est répertoriée (fig. 1)², est tout à fait caractéristique de son art. Dans un paysage idéal, des nymphes sylvestres nues jouent dans une clairière. Leurs carnations nacrées et la volupté de leurs formes leur confère une pureté de statuaire antique. Elles incarnent l''esprit de la nature dans laquelle elles évoluent et se confondent, à l''image de cette nymphe allongée dont les cheveux viennent se mêler aux herbes hautes.

Taxes and VAT: In addition of the lot's hammer price, the buyer must pay the following costs and fees/taxes:

Lots from the EEC:
• From €1 to €30,000: 25% + current VAT (for books, VAT = 1,375%; for other categories, VAT = 5%).
• From €30,001 to €1,200,000: 20% + current VAT (for books, VAT = 1,1%; for other categories, VAT = 4%).
