One Cent "Bailey & Company" Philadelphia
EP-5, HB-44, S-21, Reed-BC01. Encased Postage Stamp. One Cent. BAILEY & CO., JEWELLERS, 819 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia. Choice About Uncirculated.
Rated as Rarity-8 (5 to 10 known) according to Fred Reed. This gorgeous example has a bright rich blue Benjamin Franklin stamp with near perfect centering having excellent eye appeal. The mica is perfectly natural and has no problems or detractions whatsoever. Some traces of original Silvering can been seen within the sharp central text on the reverse. The case has a nice even natural chestnut patina with one minor bend to the right moon, apparently as made. This is only the forth example of a One Cent BAILEY & CO. EP we have offered over the past two decades. Our December 11, 1999, EAHA Auction, lot 549, graded Extremely Fine, sold for $2,415. One example with pedigree Ex: Stack's February 1969 sale (no insert tag) sold in our November 15, 2011 EAHA Auction, lot 116, at $4,425. The latest example in our EAHA Auction of of June 26, 2015, lot 200, graded Ch. About Uncirculated, selling for $3,600.
