Description: Encased Postage Stamps
Finest Three Cents "Ellis McAlpin & Company" Rarity-9
EP-43, HB-111, Scott-79, Reed-EM03. Three Cents. ELLIS McALPIN & COMPANY. Extremely Fine.
Rated as Rarity-9 (2 to 4 known) according to Fred Reed. The 1989 Hodder-Bowers "Standard Catalogue" reference states, "The 3 value is extremely rare, with fewer than four pieces thought to survive" and is further listed with dashes, in all grades in place of price values, due to its great rarity. The 1863 Williams' Cincinnati City Directory notes: "Ellis, McAlpin & Co., Wholesale Dealers in Dry Goods, 108 W. Pearl, and 119 W. 3d." This firm survived almost until the end of the 20th century under the name of McAlpin's, by which time it had become a large department store chain. In 1998, McAlpin's parent company was itself subsequently acquired by the retail giant Dillard's of Little Rock, Arkansas, and consequently, McAlpin's stores were changed over to the name of the new owner "Dillards."

Ex: Richard Wolffers, Inc. Auction of April 1986, lot 3933 as identified on a paper insert card with that pedigree and attribution notation included. This specimen has pleasing high grade with a short mica craze crack just below the left side obverse moon and a lamination craze above Washington's head. The stamp is well centered with nice original red color. The case is a natural medium chestnut in color, defect free, with sharply detailed reverse legends. A significant "Key" Encased Postage Stamp if any collector wishes to complete a full collection set.
