Scarce Small AYER'S Type - "AYER'S SARSAPARILLA"
EP-34, HB-29, S-15, Reed-AS03SM. Three Cents, AYER'S SARSAPARILLA, Civil War Encased Postage Stamp, SMALL "AYER'S" type, Choice About Uncirculated.
Rated as Rarity-4 (31 to 40 Known) according to Fred Reed. An elusive major listed variety having a greater rarity in our opinion, than currently listed. Our personal observations certify that this EP-34 "SMALL AYER'S" type has perhaps a "15 to 1" ratio over the EP-34B "LARGE AYER'S" variety, and perhaps as much as a "80 to 1" ratio versus the common "Medium AYER'S" type. The present example has a pleasing red George Washington stamp, slight wrinkle as produced. This piece, otherwise, has light even wear for the grade and a pleasing even natural chestnut color. The back is sharply detailed being stamped with the legend: "Ayer's Sarsaparilla To Purify The Blood Pat. Aug. 12, 1862 J. Gault." A lovely high quality and pleasing example even for the discriminating collector needing to fill this tougher variety.
