Sundial with an octagonal basic shape and inset compass with blued steel needle
With latitude scale, hour circle with Roman numerals and an attached gnomon and a compass needle under glass
Both sides inscribed to in degree sign of different countries
Dimensions: 2.5 x 8.5 cm
Portable sundials were widespread throughout Europe at this time. Sundials were the primary medium of timekeeping because mechanical watches were still very inaccurate and extremely expensive.
The compass is in good, age-related condition with usual signs of usage. The box is worn and the cover is loose. (lvp)
