More About this Item

Description: 1855 RIO DE JANEIRO. Acçao de 200$000 Reis, printer proof. blue, brown. #190000. The first state-owned railway of Brazil, formed 1855, and named after the Emperor. Pedro II was keen to develop the economy, and realised the importance of a rail network. His ambitious project was to link Rio de Janeiro, Belem, Cachoeira (near Bahia) and Porto Novo da Cunha. The first line was opened in 1858, to great celebrations. The line actually built was north from Rio to Itabira, in Minas Geraes, with branches, so in fact the majority of the planned system was not built. In the 1880s, when Brazil had become a republic, the name was changed to the Central Railway. At that time it had 828km of track. The certificate is very fine, with a portrait of the Emperor, a border with the agricultural produce of Brazil, railway views, and a large underprint of a loco. The reverse shows the arms of Brazil, with coffee and tobacco. Exceptional piece - a printer proof from the Wiesener printers in Paris.
