CATALOGUE NOTE
Fabbi ranks among the most important nineteenth-century Italian Orientalist painters. He studied at the Academia di Belle Arti in Florence, at which he became a professor in 1893. After finishing his studies, he travelled to Paris, Munich and Egypt, the latter destination leaving a lasting impression on the young artist and determining the subject matter of most of his artistic output.
Fabbi's depictions of oriental processions, such as the present work, and of young girls on show in slave markets (see lot 123), bazaars or within the confines of a harem (see lot 112) found an eager market during his lifetime, and have remained popular to this day.
