NOTE
Petr Konchalovsky came from an illustrous family of artists and writers, and was one of the principal figures in the Moscow avant-garde movment. Like many of his Russian contemporaries, Konchalovsky was an appropriationist. With amazing ease, he mixed the styles of the French avant-garde artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin and Henri Matisse. In his landscape paintings he was perhaps most influenced by Cezanne as can be clearly seen in the offered lot. Konchalovsky combined simple forms with an intricate play of colour to create his dramatic compositions. Indeed, trees were one of Konchalovsky's favourite themes, and he defined the search for his new artistic style in following words: I really wanted to create a 'live' landscape, in which the trees do not simply stick out, as often seen in contemporary art, but grow out of soil so that the viewer can sense its roots, like in Old Master paintings.
