NOTE
The present work depicts the second of the six warships to be named H.M.S. Southampton. She was a thirty-two gun 5th rate and was built at Rotherhithe in 1757. She saw action throughout the heyday of the Royal Navy, being involved in the battles of Belle Isle, the Glorious first of June and Cape St Vincent amongst other actions. This famous ship, thought to be the first true frigate ever built, was finally wrecked off the Bahamas in 1812.
The painting was owned by Thomas Bruce, Earl of Elgin, who was the man responsible for removing the Parthenon Marbles from Athens and selling them to the British Museum.
