F.E. McWilliam R.A., H.R.U.A. (1909-1992) Patriarch Bronze with a brown patina, 56 cm. (22 in.) high Signed with initials and numbered 1/4 on the base Conceived circa 1953 The present work is a Marquette for the larger finished piece (measuring 96 in. high) of the same title formerly in the McClelland collection. Mel Gooding comments that during the fifties McWilliam moved "towards more abstract standing relief forms, somewhat like heraldic and symbolic devices. Eve and Patriarch are among the finest examples of his work in the earlier mode" (Mel Gooding, F.E. McWilliam Sculpture 1932-1989, Tate Gallery, London, 1989, p.47).
