Description: Ferdinand Knab travelled to Italy in 1868 where he mainly studied the ruins of Roman antiquity. The present landscape, painted two years after this sojourn, reflects the influence of the trip. It captures the light and the atmosphere of Italy in its depiction of the antique ruins. Ferdinand Knab later became court painter to Ludwig II in Munich, where he had also studied at the academy and participated amongst others in the decoration of the winter garden in the Munich residence.
