Description: Fernand-Anne Piestre Cormon (French, 1845-1924) oil on canvas. Cormon, a French Academic Salon painter, studied under Alexandre Cabanel before starting his own art school, the Atelier Cormon, where he taught artists including Matisse, Soutine, Toulouse-Lautrec, and van Gogh. Although primarily remembered for the Academic training he provided to these artists, his work is held in the collections of the Louvre, the Musée d’Orsay, the Hermitage, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York among many others. The untitled painting dates from his Orientalist period c.1860-1870. This oil on canvas painting portrays a young nude woman reclining in decadent bed chamber smoking a cigarette behind a hookah and pitcher. The space is filled with ornate carpets decorated with peacocks and other Orientalist motifs. This work, like many of his others from this time, features a harem-like setting and an intoxicated nude. The painting is signed “F. Cormon” in the lower left corner. The canvas on its original stretcher measures 20 by 28 inches and is in very good condition. The reverse shows a patch just above the nude’s hip on one of the peacocks and the edge of the canvas has frame wear. There may also have been some early conservation. This painting requires a professional cleaning to return the vibrant colors Cormon was known to use.
