Oil on canvas, relined
Flemish school, around 1700
Dimensions: 250 x 160.5 cm
Provenance: Private collection, Belgium
The artist of this Entombment group lays emphasis on the scenery using light: While the protagonists of the scenery primarily Christ as well as Mary are bathed in bright light the wider circle belongs to the darker background.
The painting is overall strongly discolored and partially tiny craquelure and scattered small color flaking can be seen. There is a horizontal running crease in the center probably because two parts of the canvas had been stitched together. The canvas is loosely in the lower part, thus in this part are larger losses of color and craquelure. Rubbed spots affect the edges and partially the varnish on the figures. Several restored spots are in the sky and scattered retouched spots can be seen under UV light. Mainly in the lower part and on the reverse are traces of mold. The painting is in need of a restoration. (msc)
