More About this Item

Description: FOLLOWER OF SIR EDWARD COLEY BURNE-JONES, Bt, ARA (1833-1898) THE SONG OF SOLOMON Triptych, with text beneath the images, within an associated carved oak frame Central image 65 x 45cm. approx.; Side images 63.5 x 16cm. approx.; Overall size 107 x 113cm. approx. * The verses are from the Vulgate Bible's Song of Songs (or Song of Solomon, or Canticles). Song of Songs has often been interpreted as a parable of the relationship of God and the Church with the human soul, lyrically symbolised as the union of a husband and wife. The protagonists are a woman (identified in one verse as `the Shulamite`) and a man, and the poem suggests a thoughtful, reverential transition from courtship to consummation. It is one of the shortest books in the Bible, consisting of only 117 verses. Its sensuous imagery has inspired artists for hundreds of years and interpretations exist by artists as varied as William Blake and Marc Chagall. ** Central panel split. Needs a clean.
