Description: [Civil War/Indian War Officer] Elizabeth B. Custer. FOLLOWING THE GUIDON. Harper & Brothers, 1890. 1st edition. 8vo. 341, blank , ads  pp. 8vo. Olive green cloth. Very good. Ffep signed by Robert Goldthwaite Carter. Carter fought in the Indian Wars. He won the Congressional Medal of Honor for his role at Brazos River, TX (1871) for holding the left portion of the line after the right portion had retreated. Having shattered a leg bone in battle, he later returned to active duty in 1873-76, as a Captain. R. G. Carter also fought in the Civil War as an enlisted man, fighting at Antietem, Gettysburg, the Siege of Petersburg, and the Battle of the Wilderness. R. G. Carter also wrote at least 4 books and several shorter works. His son, Robert Dexter Carter,was a civilian quartermaster clerk in the Philippines during the Spanish-American War.
