WITH AN APPENDIX RELATING TO STEAM NAVIGATION IN THE PACIFIC. London. 1839. 8vo. xvi, 352 pp. + ten lithographed plates and folding map, publisher's slip inserted between 338/339. Bound in early 20th c. gilt-ruled 1/2 levant with spine lettered in gilt and top edge gilt. Hinges rubbed, slight loss to corners, gutter cracked after title leaf, title with very faint circular blind-stamp, text quite clean overall, some plates with margins cropped closely, a couple of plates with faded stains and others with patches of foxing, overall contents quite clean. A Very Good example. **************************************************** "First book in the English language devoted exclusively to California and of permanent value on its Indians and early missions" - Howes. An important account by one of the first Anglo-Saxons to explore this unknown territory, although he did not see the region until after the book was published, having collected information from his agents working there. "...He reaped the reward of his enterprise by securing the possession of the great quicksilver mines, now worked by the firm of which he is the head..." - Sabin. The map, produced for inclusion in this work, shows upper and lower California, Mexico (including Texas) and Guatemala, with insets of Pacific harbors.
