Fore Edge Painted Book
"The Complete Works of Shakespeare", Abbey Library, Romania, N.D. (circa 1930's). Painted on fore edge and sides. This thick (4") book has a watercolor scene of the Globe Theatre in London, with surrounding buildings and the Thames on the fore edge. Top and bottom edges have some watercolor painting. Unlike traditional fore edge painted books, this example does not need the pages fanned to see the images, thus the edges are not gilt. Some cover soiling. Paper quite toned. Very good condition.
