Folio (350 x 220mm.), title-page printed in red and black with engraved vignette, woodcut diagrams in the text, initials, head- and tail-pieces, manuscript table pasted over the printed table on Oooo1 recto, old vellum, lacking final leaf, some light spotting and staining, a few wormholes (some in text with slight loss), table on Rrr2 verso & Rrr3 recto trimmed at fore-edge, occasional short tears, old rebacking

Houzeau & Lancaster 10707

NOTE

First edition, "très rare" (Houzeau & Lancaster). From 1629 until 1640 Georges Fournier was professor of mathematics at La Flèche, where he had been educated by the Jesuits, and then from 1640 until 1642 at Hesdin. This work contains sections on navigation, the construction of ships, the rules of the sea, longitude, compasses, tides etc. It enjoyed enormous success and in 1667 a second edition was published, containing a supplementary section, La Navigation du roy d'Escosse Iaques Cinquiesme autour de son royaume & Isles Hebrides et Orchades, and an engraved plate of a French warship, which was issued separately and is sometimes found added to copies of the first edition.
