FRAMED REVERSE-PAINTING-ON-GLASS DEPICTING THE SCREW SLOOP H.M.S. DOTEREL English, Late 19th Century
Unsigned. The Doterel sank in 1881 after suffering an accidental explosion while moored in Punta Arenas. She sank in minutes. 143 men perished, with only twelve of the crew, including the captain, surviving. A memorial for the lost men still remains in the Punta Arenas Cemetery in Chile. Housed in a bird's-eye maple frame. 16" x 24".
