Cyclope is from the "Monsters" series that Picabia executed between 1924 and 1927. These compositions draw their subject matter from the old masters (Dürer, Rubens, Titian), while touching upon the conventional theme of the woman, or the couple. However in these works he attacks painting in his forms and techniques -- Ripolin drips down the surface and oftentimes collage elements are found. Picabia takes pleasure in caricaturing the classic masterpieces, scorning conventional techniques and style. Faces systematically morph into grotesque masks with pointed noses, enormous almond-shaped eyes and angular chins. An exagerated anatomic simplification is reinforced with heavy lines juxtaposed with violent colour. Deformed bodies translate into dynamic movement. In Cyclope, Picabia finds inspiration in a classic theme all the while treating it with a grimace.
