Plates: tinted lithographic pictorial title, etched frontispiece dedicated to the memory of Blanco, 1 page of tinted lithographic manuscript facsimile of Blanco's notes, 412 fine chromolithographic plates only (of 477) after Lorenzo Guerrero, Regino Garcia y Basa, Fabian Domingo, C.Arguelles, J.Garcia, Rosendo Garcia, F.Martinez and others, printed by C.Verdaguer of Barcelona. Text bound in contemporary morocco-backed cloth, spines gilt in six compartments with raised bands, lettered in the second and the fourth, dated in the sixth (some neat small repairs to spines and covers); Plates in contemporary morocco-backed decorated cloth, the lower cover blocked in black, the upper in gilt and black, the spines tooled in gilt to match the text but without raised bands and undated (joints splitting, some small neat repairs). RARE 'EDICI¢N DE LUJO', A LARGE PAPER ISSUE LIMITED TO 500 COPIES, DESCRIBING THE FLOWERS, FRUIT AND TREES OF THE PHILIPPINES. The present edition is in effect the third edition of the pioneering work written by the Spanish priest, explorer and botanist Francisco Blanco and first published in Manila in a small quarto volume in 1837 (see lot 9). Blanco's text is here expanded and amended and provided with many excellent quality illustrations. This edition was issued in two formats: an 'edici¢n econ¢mica' with the plates uncoloured and numbered, and the present limited 'edici¢n de lujo'.
