Preparatory study for Juana la Loca signed, inscribed and dated 'F.Pradilla esp Juana la Loca. Diciembre 1876.' (lower right); and inscribed 'Estudio pintado de mi mano para mi cuadro "Juana la Loca", el a¤o 1876, (espa¤a- Roma.) y conservado en mi estudio hasta el presente a¤o. Francisco Pradilla y Ortiz. a¤o 1916' (on the reverse) oil on canvas 171/4 x 223/4 in. (43.8 x 57.7 cm.) Painted in 1876 NOTES Painted in 1876 the present work is a highly finished preparatory study for Pradilla's hugely successful painting Juana la Loca completed in 1877 (A. Garcia Loranca and J. Ramon Garcia-Rama, Vida y obra del pintor Francisco Pradilla Ortiz, no. 40, illustrated p. 324). The finished painting was awarded a Medal of Honour at the 1878 Exposici¢n Nacional de Bellas Artes and now hangs in the Prado Museum, Madrid. The present work hung in the artist's studio until 1916.
