'His paintings are proof that the player "chance" is capable of turning into an aesthetic necessity when merely thinking functions according to theorems. Morellet does not only suggest to the spectator, in all modesty, to engage in an intellectuatlly stimulating viewing of his petits systèmes (little systems), but he wants to offer them "empty paintings" which should enable the spectator to "unpack their impressions, their picnic"' (C. Blechen, 'Morellet in der Nationalgalerie Berlin. Spielerischer Zufall und ästhetische Notwendigkeit', Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Frankfurt 1977, no 34).
