Description:
Title: Colonial Architecture: Fifty Salem Doorways
Author: Frank Cousins - A dry goods retailer by trade, Frank Cousins picked up a camera in his thirties to photograph the colonial and Federal-era buildings of his Salem, both in their exterior and interior entirety and in detail. He seldom put it down thereafter, and took tens of thousands of photographs which he sold to customers in his own store (Frank Cousins’ Bee-Hive) as well as to architects, authors, publishers, and libraries through the “Frank Cousins Art Company.” [Courtesy National Trust for Historic Preservation]
Publisher: Doubleday, Page & Company
City: Garden City, New York
Year: 1912
Binding Style: Other - see description
Pagination: 50 plates
Width: 11.25" Height: 15.25"
Book Details: An informative portfolio of photographs of Salem doorways, photographed by the author. This was the first and last of the "Colonial Architecture Series" but it was quite popular. Cousins, a native of Salem, went on to produce several more books on colonial architecture about other cities and for other publishers.
Condition / Notes: This is "Series I" of the "Colonial Architecture Series," but it is the only volume of the series that was produced. The antique portfolio of loose plates has illustrated paper-covered boards and a brown cloth backstrip. There is moderate external wear and rubbing, heaviest at the edges. An armorial bookplate reading "Bibliotheque Schorsch" is present to the front paste-down. The cloth ties are absent, and one internal flap is separated. Two architectural sketches and a pamphlet from the Essex Institute are laid in. The small folio contains 50 loose (as issued) black-and-white photographic plates showing the plate number, building name, address, description, and additional historical data printed on the verso. The internal plates appear clean and bright.
