Description: Early 6th century AD. A bronze square-headed bow brooch comprising: rectangular headplate with raised border, two hooked-cross motifs and cell (for a cabochon garnet?); broad bow with four Style I profile masks; cruciform footplate with central lozenge and cell, Style I lappets to the shoulder, Style I motifs to the outer edge and plain finial; catchplate and remains of ferrous pin to the reverse. Cf. Menghin, W. The Merovingian Period. Europe Without Borders, Berlin, 2007, item VII.10.14. 11 grams, 58mm (2 1/4"). Property of a German collector; acquired in the 1980s and 1990s.
