LAKE SUPERIOR signed; titled and dated "1925" on the reverse oil on board 25.4 by 30.5 cm. 10 by 12 in. Jackson and Harris first visited the north shore of Lake Superior in 1921. They invited Carmichael to join them in the fall of 1925. Once he saw this pristine wilderness, Carmichael returned regularly. The area has spectacular views from the heights, a dramatic shore line, and broad lakes dotted with islands. Carmichael had a selective personal vision and style that perfectly suited the sweeping wide-angled scenic panorama that lay before him. With well-defined forms and a cool palette, he vividly catches the mystery and austerity of this northern region. The autumn colours - reds and golds - added richness to Carmichael's exceptional capability to dramatize this grand vista.
