NORTHERN LAKES inscribed and titled on a label on the backing on the reverse watercolour on paper 27.9 by 34.3 cm. 11 by 13 1/2 in. Carmichael developed an unmistakable style perfectly suited to the sweeping wide-angled vistas that he chose to immortalize in paintings of La Cloche Hills. His paintings gave the north country a new meaning, and Canadians a new awareness of the further reaches of their country. In Northern Lakes, the contours are carefully and almost systematically observed. Duval comments: "Indeed, some of his watercolours almost resemble designs for stained glass: clouds, foliage and earth are all given the same crisp delineation."
